Gearing up for NaNoWriMo

September 14, 2016

Well, I'm still writing various odds and ends (few short stories which need editing and then a home), plus I have the dystopian fantasy to work on, but I'm getting ready for this November and NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). For those who don't know, this is a US-based scheme where you register to write a 50,000 word draft of a new project during November. No fees, no prizes (other than a certificate to print out), and you don't write on their site, but just keep a running total of your word count. Did it last year, and the summer version in July, so I know that I am capable of it. Have decided to set myself something different in style each time that I do this; steampunk last year, fantasy in July, and so I've decided on writing something historical for this one. Plan is for a novel set in the chaos of the Thirty Years War (Germany 1618-48). Another nice, cheerful subject. Lots of background reading to do, but I've plotted a rough structure and shall then see how it goes. Might never be worth publishing, but then again it might. I quite like the pressure whih this sets, as I try to make myself write every day anyway (although that isn't always possible), and I tend to write better with a deadline. Shall probably post snippets or suchlike on here as I go. Anyway, that is not for about 6 weeks. Lots of other things to be getting on with. XXX
